Top 10 graphic design trends of 2023
Good design adds to the identity of our favorite brands and goes much beyond its physical appearance. Through the use of images, shades, and shapes, we can provide information, convey messaging, or persuade our audience.
It can be difficult to keep up with the developments in the world of graphic design because there are so many players and influences. It’s vital to stay up with the current graphic design trends as a designer and decide which ones work in your portfolio.
1. Combining 2D x 3D
For many years, there has been an increasing trend in 3D design, and it continues to evolve and establish itself. It allows designers to be as creative as they want because it provides an almost infinite number of alternatives.
The most popular work in this category includes everything from highly realistic 3D visuals that blur the line between digital and physical elements to mashups that combine 2D graphics and paper cutouts.
2. Nostalgia
Popular media such as Netflix’s Cobra Kai and Stranger Things (among many others) have recently resurrected 80s nostalgia and heralded a new era of vaporwave landscapes, neon colors, and Gothic serifs. In 2022, retro comebacks will finally reach the 1990s!
Many of the patterns on this list reflect a return to the 1990s. However, the nostalgia tendency shows a romanticized nostalgia for the past.
To that goal, we’re using rudimentary emojis, archaic internet frames, geometric patterns, and scribbled artwork to relive the 1990s. Childhood’s dripping slime and vivid color blocks reign supreme.
3. Twisted Typography
This trend involves anything “abnormal” that disrupts your order, such as one letter upside down, in a larger or smaller font, or completely missing.
In a smaller text, a section of your writing could be positioned to reveal a different message than the rest. This trend is a terrific approach to make a statement and bring attention to a certain part of the design.
4. Japanese Anime
The Japanese art form of ukiyo-e flourished from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Female beauty, kabuki players, sumo wrestlers, historical and folk tale settings, travel sceneries, landscapes, and flora and animals were all painted. The Japanese name ukiyo-e means “images of floating worlds.”
The sharp contours, flat colors, and limited perspective approaches used in vector graphics are recognizable to designers. Similar designs are being employed in today’s creative sector to give basic flat vector scenes an extra edge.
5. Candy Coloured Vibes
It’s difficult enough to stand out in today’s sea of online content creation. As a result, graphic designers have begun to use color in novel ways to catch our attention while scrolling.
A new fad of bright candy-colored sceneries is sweeping the internet.
Hint: Knowing and applying color theory to your yummy digital works will make it easier to produce these fairy-floss themes.
6. Anti-Design
Anti-design refers to the rejection of established design ideas and aesthetics.
Asymmetry, color clashes, bare interfaces, and complex patterns all test our senses in this style. The style has been chastised for appearing ugly for the purpose of being ugly. To its advocates, however, it results in projects that are free of the beauty standards imposed by traditional designers.
7. NFT Like 3D Characters
Fans of the Nintendo 64, rejoice! Many apps, websites, and animations have reintroduced our favorite 3D-style characters into the graphic design world.
Characters can be made as 2D designs, holographic designs, candy color designs, or whatever else we’ve discussed thus far. As shown in the examples below, we can all enjoy the 3D character trend.
8. Parametric Patterns
A parametric pattern is made out of geometric components with morphing lines based on their relative placements. The aesthetic is inspired by graphs of parametric equations.
Parametric patterns, as part of the 2022 designs, indicate the complexity of the issues they represent, ranging from communication to identification.
Patterns are heavily used in the graphic design business. These decorative embellishments break up solid hues and give visual appeal to backdrops. Designers will place statement patterns front and center in 2022 with parametric geometry.
9. Holographic Design
Holographic design is unmistakably high-tech and futuristic, with its blend of high-gloss multidimensional pastel hues. These highlights provide the appearance of movement even in static photographs. This approach has been particularly popular among 3D motion designers because to its captivating effects.
The holographic fad has recently made its way into various aspects of our lives, such as fashion (remember those see-through holographic bags and jelly shoes from the 1990s? ), stationary, and so on. As a result, it should come as no surprise that this trend has spread to animation and the online. Apps and logos are no different.
10. High School Bubbles
A graphic designer’s job isn’t complete until he or she has had some fun. Because circles lack corners, they exude a warm, playful atmosphere that is unquestionably good. Designing rounded graphics and font styles will be a prominent trend in 2022, since we could all use more positivity in our lives.
Instead of the normal bubble fonts and shapes featured on children’s products, the 2022 trend is emphasized by elongated forms and colorful hues. As a result, the inflatable design feels mature while still preserving that important element of infantile play.
